An allergy is a severe reaction of the immune system to food proteins, which can lead to life-threatening consequences. Food intolerance, on the other hand, occurs when the body has difficulty digesting a particular food due to its components or enzymatic functions. Food intolerance can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, headaches, and brain fog.
Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have a higher risk of developing food allergies and intolerances. The inflammatory response triggered by these allergies and intolerances can negatively affect sleep, focus, and attention. As a result, it may lead to aggressive behaviors, hyperactivity, and repetitive actions in individuals with autism.
