When we look at it solely from the perspective of microbiota:
- The numerical balance of the microbiota
- The diversity of microbiota species
- The beneficial or harmful final metabolic products produced by the microbiota
- Genetic mutations that can develop within the microbiota
- Antibiotic resistance genes and toxin genes in the microbiota
- Intestinal permeability
- Relationships with other systems in our body
- Production of Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs)
- Certain hormones or signaling molecules secreted by enterochromaffin cells in the intestines that produce hormones
- The Enteric Nervous System (ENS) present in the intestines and its relationships with the systemic autonomic nervous system and its subdivisions (sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system) and the systemic medical outcomes they may produce
- The synthesis of signaling molecules (neurotransmitters) in the intestines that affect the brain
- Important roles played by the gut microbiota in relation to systemic inflammation, allergy responses, and oxidative stress activations
These aspects have relationships with all systems in our body and can produce significant medical outcomes related to health and diseases.
